The Dublin Airport Authority has confirmed its second terminal would*open in two years' time.
But the group has said its total debt burden will rise to over €1.2bn as a result of the development in the next three years.
After years of complaints about over crowding Dublin Airport Authority is making progress with the solution.
The steel frame of the building for the second terminal is in place. Work has commenced on an airport apron space 40 times the size of Croke Park.
But the cost of its expansion will have to be partly met by members of the public. In future years passenger charges will rise by €2.
Ryanair claims the facility is too big and too expensive. But the authority says it is designed to meet a balance of needs and is a vital gateway to the nation.
Today the authority announced its profits had jumped 56% to €109m. The authority also announced Cork Airport will be separated to become a stand-alone organisation.
