THERE was just one winner of the Lotto jackpot over the weekend but there was no shortage of suggestions yesterday as to who that one winner might be.
A small group of journalists was followed by a large group of noisy children as they trooped to an ever-increasing number of "guaranteed" addresses in the Rowlagh area of Clondalkin (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Clondalkin), Dublin (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Dublin).
However, the holder of the €15.6m winning ticket -- the needle in this haystack -- wasn't too interested in being identified, if indeed he or she was awake to their good fortune.
"They mightn't even know yet, it's fairly early," Theresa Meade (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Theresa+Meade) of the Rowlagh News said.
"The first I heard of it was when there was a knock on my door this morning and I didn't believe it. The biggest winner we ever sold before was €500, so this is unbelievable."
Cameras
The €6 quick-pick ticket was sold in the shop on Saturday but as the shop only sells quick-picks, that didn't help to narrow it down too much. And despite opening the doors for the cameras, Ms Meade wasn't giving away too much.
"We have plenty of people who get a €6 ticket," she said, "but I haven't heard anything about who it might be. We wouldn't get that much through-traffic here though, so I'd say it was a local."
Others were saying much the same thing, and it wasn't long before a few names were being thrown about, and the likely winner of what is the second largest Lotto jackpot ever was soon identified.
It was news to her, however, when she answered the front door to see reporters, television cameras and a small army of children on the front step.
"I wish it was me, I'd be in Spain (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Spain)," said Rita Byrne (http://www.independent.ie/topics/Rita+Byrne), of Harelawn Avenue, denying the circulating rumours that her family had won big.
In nearby Finches Pub, the bar flies were of the opinion that any local Lotto winner would be clever enough to lie low for a few days at least. Suggestions on who that may be, though, continued unabated.
The winning numbers for the €15,658,143 jackpot were 6, 26, 27, 32, 44 and 45. The bonus number was 41.
