European Nations Cup 1960
The European Championship, or Nations Cup as it was called then, was first held in 1960. Qualifying commenced in 1959 with only 17 teams entering with England, Italy and West Germany refusing to take part.
The first ever match (a preliminary round) was actually held at Dalymount Park, Dublin with Ireland defeating Czechoslavakia 2-0. The first ever goal scored by Liam Touhy. However, the Czechoslovaks ran out 4-0 winners in the second leg in Bratislava to progress to the First Round. Again a two legged affair it culminated with eight teams progressing to the Quarter Finals.
In the QF, France defeated Austria 9-4 on aggregate with the great Just Fontaine bagging three of them. Yugoslavia put paid to Portugal 6-3 with Czechoslavakia easing past Romania 5-0 over the two legs. Controversy reined in the remaining Quarter Final. Spain were drawn to play the Soviet Union. The Spanish however refused to travel to Moscow (the fascists and the communists didnt get on) so the tie was awarded to the Soviets.
With four teams now through to the semis, UEFA decided that France should host the remainder of the tournament. The USSR hammered Czechoslavakia 3-0 in Marseilles but a real cracker took place in Paris. The French were 3-1 up against Yugoslavia only for the Slavs to come back and win the match 5-4 to progress to the Final.
In the Final at Parc des Princes, USSR defeated Yugoslavia 2-1 to become the first winners of the Henri Delauney trophy. The Final was referreed by Arthur Ellis who went on to 'greater' things with 'It's a Knockout'.

European Nations Cup 1964
Entrants had increased to 29 with West Germany still abstaining. Only one withdrawal as Greece refused to play Albania (oh the politics of the day). Again the early rounds were two legged affairs. There was plenty of shocks in the 1st Round as France demolished England 5-2 in Paris (6-2agg), Bulgaria knocked out the fancied Portuguese and East Germany defeated Czechoslavakia. Ireland beat Iceland 4-2 at home and drew 1-1 away with Liam Touhy scoring in both games.
The shocks continued in the 2nd Round as Sweden beat Yugoslavia, Luxembourg knocking out the Dutch and the Italians losing to the USSR. Ireland marched into the Quarter Finals after holding Austria 0-0 in Vienna and winning 3-2 at Dalymount with a last minute Noel Cantwell penalty.
Ireland's run ended with defeat to Spain losing 2-0 in Dublin and a 5-1 drubbing in Seville.
The Soviets continued their defence of the trophy defeating Sweden 4-2 on agg and Hungary thrashed France 5-2 with Florian Albert pulling the strings and Ferenc Bene in outstanding form.
Spain, USSR, Hungary and surprise qualifiers Denmark contested in Semi Finals which were held in Spain. Denmark went out to the holders USSR in a one-sided 3-0 defeat in Barcelona. The other match was tighter as Spain needed an extra time winner from Amancio to beat Hungary 2-1 in Madrid.
This set up a Final between Spain and the USSR, the team they refused to play four years earlier. This time General Franco sanctioned the game and Spain duly won 2-1 with Marcelino's winner. What would have happened if Spain lost is anyones guess. This remains the only major trophy that Spain have won, will that change this year, come on El Nino !

European Championship 1968
Due to increased popularity UEFA had to introduce its now familiar group stages. Ireland put up a brave fight in a tough group and recorded a fantastic 2-1 victory in Prague on the last day to deprive Czechoslavakia from qualifying. Spain going through instead. West Germany failed to qualify after they could only draw in Albania in their last game meaning Yugoslavia went through. England topped an all British group despite Scotland beating the World champions.
Quarter Finals
Italy beat Bulgaria 2-0, 2-3.
USSR beat Hungary 3-0, 0-2.
England beat Spain 1-0, 2-1.
Yugoslavia beat France 5-1, 1-1.
Semi Finals
Yugoslavia beat England 1-0 in Florence with Dzajic getting the goal. Alan Mullery became the first England player to be sent off. The other semi ended 0-0 between Italy and USSR in Naples. With no shoot-outs in those days, the match was decided by a 'toss of a coin'. The Soviet captain calling wrongly.
Final
A tight game in Rome ended 1-1 after extra time, Dzajic putting Yugoslavia in front and Domenghini equalising for Italy. In the replay two days later Italy triumphed thanks to goals from Riva and Anastasi. It remains Italy's only Euro crown despite winning four World Cups.

European Championship 1972
As Ireland reached their nadir (yes folks things were worse once), the Germans continued their rise to the top. In the qualifying groups Romania topped Group 1 on goals conceded ahead of Czechoslavakia. Group 2 saw Hungary finish ahead of France and Bulgaria. England romped Group 3. The USSR beat Spain in Group 4. Group 5 saw shock winners Belgium finish ahead of Portugal and Scotland. The biggest shock was in Group 7 where the much fancied Holland team finished behind Yugoslavia and we had to wait two years to see total football on the World stage. Group 8 was easily won by West Germany with Gerd 'der Bomber' Muller scoring 6.
Group 6 was the stage for Ireland to reach its lowest point. Having drawn with Sweden at home in the opening game, Ireland lost the next five games conceding 16 goals, the worst being a 6-0 defeat in Vienna.
Quarter Finals(home & away)
USSR beat Yugoslavia 3-0, 0-0.
Hungary beat Romania 2-1, 1-1, 2-2
Belgium beat Italy 2-1, 0-0.
West Germany beat England 0-0, 3-1.
The first leg at Wembley was an intriguing encounter, England were favourites (and the best team in the world of course), but they were demolished by Germanys free flowing attacking football especially by the long blonde haired Gunther Netzer. Goals from Hoeness, Netzer and Muller anihilated England and was the beginning of their decline into also rans for the next eight years.
Semi Finals
Held in Belgium, the Germans disposed of the hosts 2-1 in Antwerp with Muller scoring both.
In Brussels the USSR defeated Hungary 1-0 with a goal from Konkov.
Final
In a one-side Final, West Germany hammered USSR 3-0 with the game over by the hour mark. Herbert Wimmer scoring one and who else but 'der Bomber' getting the other two. Muller scored 10 goals in 8 games.
The Germans would go on to dominate European and World football for the next 24years adding two more European crowns and of course the World Cup in 74 and 90. All in all they would play in NINE major Finals out of THIRTEEN from 1972 to 1996. Versprung dirch Technik as they say in Stuttgart.

European Championships 1976
Ireland narrowly missed out on qualification with a fantastic campaign. We beat USSR 3-0 and Turkey 4-0 at Dalymount, with Don Givens getting all seven goals. However a 1-0 defeat in Switzerland put paid to our hopes.
England were knocked out by the Czechs after a 2-1 defeat in Bratislava.
Quarter Finals (home & away)
Czechoslavakia beat USSR 2-0, 2-2.
Yugoslavia beat Wales 2-0, 1-1.
West Germany beat Spain 2-0, 1-1.
Holland beat Belgium 5-0, 2-1.
Semi Finals
Held in Yugoslavia it was set up as a repeat of the 74 World Cup Final between Holland and West Germany but the Czechoslavaks had other ideas. In a fascinating game in Zagreb the Czechs beat Holland 3-1 after extra time.
In Belgrade West Germany beat the hosts 4-2 after extra time thanks to a hat-trick from Muller, not Gerd but Dieter.
Final
It was 2-2 after extra time and the World witnessed the first shoot-out in a major final. Uli Hoeness missed for the Germans and Anton Panenka scored the decisive penalty with a delightful chip and Czechoslavakia were champions.

European Championships 1980
Not a good campaign for Ireland. We beat Bulgaria (3-0) and Denmark (2-0) at home but could only draw with England and N.Ireland at Lansdowne. Away from home was a nightmare as usual. We threw away a two goal lead to draw 3-3 in Copenhagen, lost 1-0 in Belfast, lost 1-0 in Sofia (Jimmy Holmes breaking his leg) and were taken apart by Kevin Keegan at Wembley (2-0).
Finals
For the first time all seven group winners qualified for the finals and were joined by hosts Italy. Split into two groups with the winners going into the Final.
In Group A, West Germany dominated beating the Czechs 1-0, Holland 3-2 (Klaus Allofs hat-trick) and drawing with Greece 0-0. Czechoslovakia pipped the Dutch to runners up spot on goal difference.
Group B was a tighter affair. England drew with Belgium (1-1) and Italy drew with Spain (0-0). Then Belgium beat Spain 2-1 and Italy beat England courtesy of a goal from a certain Marco Tardelli. With Spain and England now effectively out the deciding game of the group between Italy and Belgium ended 0-0 putting the unfancied Belgians into the Final on goals scored.
In the 3rd/4th Place Play-off Czechoslavakia beat Italy 9-8 on penalties.
Final
In an open final West Germany were crowned European Champions for the second time in eight years with two goals from Horst Hrubesch defeating the gallant Belgians 2-1 in Rome.

European Championships 1984
After missing out on the 82 World Cup on goal difference Ireland were hoping to improve on that despite being in a tough group with Spain and Holland. However defeats in Rotterdam and Zaragozza put paid to that. Spain needed to beat Malta in their last game by eleven goals. They won 12-1. The Dutch cancelled their hotels and UEFA made sure all games kicked off at the same time in future.
England failed to qualify losing to Denmark at Wembley to a Allan Simonsen penalty. Italy also failed to qualify as did Czechoslavakia and USSR. Fears that the tournament would suffer these absentees were grossly mislaid as it was the best tournament since the 1970 World Cup and alot ever since.
Finals
Group winners Spain, West Germany, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Romania, Denmark and Portugal joined hosts France. Michel Platini was the star of the tournament which introduced to the world stage futire stars like Preben Elkjaer Larrson, Lothar Matthaus, Enzo Scifo, Dragan Stojkovic, Georghe Hagi and Michael Laudrup.
Group A was riveting and there was goals galore. In a cracking opener France defeated the unlucky Danes with a late Platini strike. The game was also notable for a marvellous head butt by Manuel Amoros on Jesper Olsen which saw the Frenchman dismissed. France followed up with a 5-0 drubbing of Belgium (Platini hat-trick) and a tight 3-2 win over Yugoslavia (another Platini hat-trick). The Danes meanwhile recovered to hammer Yugoslavia 5-0 and Belgium 3-2 to progress to the semis with France.
Group B was tighter. In the last round of games Spain beat West Germany 1-0 with a last minute goal from Maceda. Portugal also needed a late goal to defeat Romania. Both Iberian teams going through to the semis.
Semi Finals
A Soren Lerby goal in Lyon put the fancied stylish Danes in the driving seat but for a late Spanish equaliser from Maceda to force extra time and penalties. Elkjaer missed his spotkick to break Danish hearts.
The other semi was one of the best games ever seen. Full back Domergue put the French in front in Marseilles but Rui Jordao equalised for Portugal. Jordao scored again in extra time and it looked decidedly dodgy for the French. With six minutes to go Dormergue's equaliser rallied the French. Both sides had chances to score in the last few minutes but it was Platini who pounced after Tigana had ran half the pitch. Marseilles erupted.
Final
A rather stoic affair never really ignited with Spain trying to contain the French 'carre magique' of Fernandez, Giresse, Tigana and Platini. Goals from Platini and Bellone sealed a 2-0 win and they were dancing on the Champs Elyssee.

Euro 88
Ireland deservedly qualified from a very tough group containing Scotland, Bulgaria and Belgium (World Cup Semi Finalists in 86). The only defeat came in Sofia with a dodgy penalty giving Bulgaria both points. We beat Scotland at Hampden and bashed Bulgaria at home 2-0.
Finals
All the big guns qualified - Italy, Spain, Holland, USSR, England, Denmark and hosts West Germany. Italy had a young team containing the likes of Vialli, Mancini, Maldini and Donadoni. England were favourites with the attacking quartet of Barnes, Waddle, Lineker and Beardsley. Unfortunately for them they couldnt defend. The Germans were strong as usual with Matthaus, Klinsmann, Kohler and Brehme. USSR and Spain were fancied too. The experts gave Ireland and Denmark no hope at all. They were right about Denmark who lost all three games. Their keeper had a nightmare. His name was Peter Schmichel.
Group A
West Germany 1-1 Italy (Brehme - Mancini)
Spain 3-2 Denmark (Michel, Butragueno, Gordillo - Laudrup, Povlsen)
West Germany 2-0 Denmark (Klinsmann, Thon)
Italy 1-0 Spain (Vialli)
West Germany 2-0 Spain (Voller2)
Italy 2-0 Denmark (Altobelli, De Agostini)
Germany and Italy went through as expected
Group B
USSR 1-0 Holland (Rats)
Ireland 1-0 England (Houghton :icon_cheesygrin:)
Holland 3-1 England (Van Basten3 - Robson)
Ireland 1-1 USSR (Whelan - Protasov)
USSR 3-1 England (Aleinikov, Mikhailichenko, Pasulko - Adams)
Holland 1-0 Ireland (Kieft 83mins :()
USSR and Holland went through
Semi Finals
In a thriller in Hamburg, Lothar Matthaus gave the Germans the lead only for Ronald Koeman to equalise. With the game heading for extra time who else but Marco van Basten pounced with a beauty in the last minute to exact revenge for 1974 and put the Dutch in the Final.
In Stuttgart USSR ran out easy winners in the end against the tired young Italians. Goals from Litovchenko and Protasov securing the win.
Final
Having already beaten the Dutch, the USSR were no match for them in the Final. Holland's two stars shone brightly. A first half header from Ruud Gullit and a breathtaking volley from Player of the Tournament van Basten gave Holland their first and surprisingly only major trophy.

Euro 92
Ireland should have qualified with probably the best squad we ever had. We drew home and away with Poland and England and beat Turkey twice. We let slip a two goal lead in Poland to draw 3-3 and we dominated England at Wembley and should have won. A late Lineker goal in Poland put us out. In my opinion we could have won it had we qualified.
Finals
USSR knocked out Italy and all the other big guns qualified - England, Germany (now united), Yugoslavia, Holland, Scotland, France and hosts Sweden. However Europe was in turmoil in late 1991. The USSR splintered into fifteen republics and Yugoslavia disintegrated into war. USSR competed under the banner CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) and Yugoslavia were banished which was a terrible shame as they were arguably the best team in the World at the time. The Golden Generation of players that won the 1987 World Youth Cup in such style, breaking records - Stojkovic, Prosinecki, Pancev, Jarni, Mijhailovic, Savicevic and Suker were denied and Denmark took there place.
The Dutch were a better side than four years ago with Bergkamp added to the ranks. The French were favourites after qualifying with a 100% record with Jean Pierre Papin terrorising defences. And of course you can never write off the Germans. England as usual were going to win it, again.
Group A
Sweden 1-1 France (Eriksson - Papin)
England 0-0 Denmark
France 0-0 England
Sweden 1-0 Denmark (Brolin)
Denmark 2-1 France (Larsen, Elstrup - Papin)
Sweden 2-1 England (Eriksson, Brolin - Platt)
Sweden and Denmark qualify for semi-finals
Group B
Holland 1-0 Scotland (Bergkamp)
Germany 1-1 CIS (Hassler - Dobrovolski)
Germany 2-0 Scotland (Riedle, Effenberg)
Holland 0-0 CIS
Scotland 3-0 CIS (McStay, McClair, McAllister)
Holland 3-1 Germany (Rijkaard, Witschge, Bergkamp - Klinsmann)
Holland and Germany qualify for semi finals
Semi Finals
In Stockholm, Germany defeated hosts Sweden 3-2 with goals from Hassler and Reidle (2). Brolin and Anderson replied for the Swedes but it wasnt enough.
In a cracker in Gothenburg, Denmark went in front through Larsen but Bergkamp equalised for the Dutch. Larsen struck again and the Danes held on til the 86th minute when Rijkaard equalised to force extra time and penalties. Marco van Basten, who had an outstanding tournament, missed his kick and the Danes went through again. Its not the first time the Dutch bottled it and it wont be the last.
Final
World Champions Germany were favourites to win their third Euro crown with players like Brehme, Kohler, Hassler, Moller, Sammer, Effenberg, Reidle and Klinsmann but the Danes surprised everyone. Goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort ensured victory for a Denmark team who had been last minute replacements for Yugoslavia.

Euro 96
The end of Jack Charlton's reign came with failure to qualify for Euro96. Ireland were flying in the group and only needed three points from the last five games. But the wheels came of with a 0-0 draw in Leichtenstein. A home draw with N.Ireland, two defeats to Austria and a Rui Costa inspired 3-0 drubbing in a rain soaked Lisbon. We actually made it to a play-off as one of the worst Runners Up. We met a resurgent Holland at Anfield and an injury ravaged Ireland were given a lesson as Patrick Kluivert scored twice.
Finals
The Euros were now enlarged to 16 teams to cater for all the former Soviet and Balkan states.
Group A
England and Holland progressed at the expense of Scotland and Switzerland. Best game was England beating Holland 4-1.
Group B
France and Spain went through at the expense of Bulgaria and Romania.
Group C
The Group of Death saw Germany ease through, but the Czech Republic pipped Italy to second place with Russia finishing fourth.
Group D
Turkey and Denmark were the whipping boys as Portugal and new-comers Croatia turned on the style.
Quarter Finals
England 0-0 Spain
Spain had two goals controversially disallowed as England went on to win 4-2on penalties. Hierro and Nadal missing.
France 0-0 Holland
A bore draw at Anfield with France winning the shoot-out 5-4, Seedorf the culprit.
Germany 2-1 Croatia
Despite the goals of Davor Suker, Croatia couldnt match the power and majesty of Andy Moller and especially Matthias Sammer. Klinsmann and Sammer getting the crucial goals.
Czech Rep. 1-0 Portugal
Karel Poborsky's second half strike was enough to break the hearts of Figo, Rui Costa and Jaio Pinto.
Semi Finals
Czech Rep 0-0 France
Another boring game went to penalties at Old Trafford with the Czechs winning 6-5.
Germany 1-1 England
A riveting game at Wembley with Alan Shearer taking the lead after 3 mins. Stefan Kuntz equalising for the Germans shortly after. Both teams hit the wood-work and had goals disallowed as the tension mounted. The Germans won on penalties, as they always do, with Gareth Southgate getting the gig at Pizza Hut.
Final
Germany 2-1 Czech Rep
The Germans enacted revenge for 1976. Patrik Berger opened the scoring with a penalty but Oliver Bierhoff equalised late to force extra time. Bierhoff then scored the 'Golden Goal' to give the Germans their third Euro title.
Golden Boot - 5 - Alan Shearer, 3 - Hristo Stoichkov, Jurgen Klinsmann, Davor Suker, Brian Laudrup.
Golden Ball - Matthias Sammer

Euro 2000
Ireland were seconds away from qualification only for a late Macedonian equaliser in Skopje to deny us top spot in a tough group. Great victories of Croatia and Yugoslavia capped a fine performance from Mick McCarthy's men. However luck ran out in the play-off as we lost to Turkey on away goals. England were jammy as usual. They thought they had failed to qualify only for Poland to lose their last game and put England through via the play-offs.
Apart from Ireland and Poland, Russia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Ukraine also missed out.
Finals
Slovenia provided the novelty to a top class field that produced the best tournament in years. Thrilling attacking football from France, Holland, Portugal, Czech Rep, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia and Slovenia provided a feast of goals. There wasnt one 'Group of Death' but three !

Semi-Finals
In Brussels, Nuno Gomez scored a cracker to put Portugal in front but France hit back with a goal from Henry. With two minutes to go in extra time Xavier handled and Zidane coolly slotted home the winner from the penalty spot. The Portuguese were incensed and protests ensued.
In Amsterdam Holland dominated against Italy and missed two penalties in normal time from Frank de Boer and Patrick Kluivert. In the shoot-out after extra time Holland amazingly missed three more and the Italians nerve held out.
Final
A thrilling suitable final for a superb tournament. Delvecchio looked to have scored the winner after 55mins but France amazingly scored in the last minute through Wiltord. In the first half of extra time David Trezequet volleyed the winning golden goal to break Italian hearts. France were World and European Champions.
Golden Boot - 5 - Kluivert, Milosevic.
Golden Ball - Zinedine Zidane

Euro 2004
The end of McCarthy and beginning of the end for Brian Kerr as Ireland had an horrendous campaign. It was over before it started with a 4-2 defeat in Moscow and 2-1 defeat at home to Switzerland.
