Telecommunications regulator ComReg has ordered Eircom to reduce the current monthly wholesale price for Local Loop Unbundling Line Share charged to other operators by 65%.

The Commission for Communications Regulation says that Eircom is being directed to cut its LLU charge from €8.41 to €2.94 in an effort to boost competition in the broadband market.

ComReg says that LLU line share is a product that Eircom is legally obliged to offer competing operators. It allows other operators to get access to the higher bandwidth part of the fixed line so that they can provide broadband without providing a conventional voice telephony service, if they choose not to do so.

This price reduction will have a very positive effect on competition in the broadband market in terms of price, quality and the choice available to residential and business consumers of broadband services,' commented ComReg Chairperson John Doherty.

UPC announces new broadband package

Meanwhile UPC, parent company of cable operators Chorus ntl, has said it will offer a new 20Mb broadband service for €40 a month.

UPC, the country's second-largest consumer broadband provider, says the new service is 8Mb faster and substantially cheaper than the nearest equivalent service provided by Eircom.

The service will be rolled out to major towns from 1 July.
